Remember the 2005 NBA Finals, when the Detroit Pistons faced off against the San Antonio Spurs? When both teams slowed the ball down and blurred the line between great defense and bad offense? Last nights match up between Terminator and Delta Force was like a Pistons/Spurs match up but with out the million dollar contracts, sold out arena and the Larry O'Brien trophy.
For the second straight week Delta Force was involved in sloppy, turnover infested game. Delta Force and Terminator combined for 15 turnovers and 17 team fouls. Needless to say neither team could sustain a rhythm through out the game. The game started promising when Rookie of the Year front runner Omar Grant knocked down two 3s including an and 1. The first half was sloppy but we saw buckets. Delta Force used motion and ball movement to constant find the open man leading to open layups. The early turnovers led to fast break points for both teams and Terminator held the lead at half time 33-26. Unfortunately for the players there was a halftime.
Once the 2nd half started both teams came out flat. Neither team was really able to score. Jump shots were hitting the back iron, layups were rolling out, it was like someone put a lid on both baskets. The signature moment of the 2nd half was when David Jacoby put up a shot as Delta Force was clawing back into the game. The ball literally rolled around the entire basket and at the last second fell out of the basket. Jacoby did his best to take over in the second half but the basket wouldn't cooperate. Jacoby led his team in scoring with 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
With the game seemingly at a stand still, Omar stepped up and took over. After hitting his two big 3s to open the game Omar tried to get his teammates more involved, emphasizing feeding his bigs. Al Reyes and David Morissy combined for 12 points but when the shots stopped falling in the 2nd half Omar wanted the ball in his hands. The rookie started slashing to the basket picking up some easy layups and willed his way to 16 points for the game. In the 2nd half both teams combined for 21 points and Team Terminator picked up the 44-36 victory.
What accounted for the 2nd half slump experienced by both teams? It must have been Dan Gladstone's birthday present, the Knick City Dancers. For the first time in NRF history a regular season game had the Knicks Dance Team as the half time entertainment. Happy birthday Dan and thank you.
