Air Force 1 54, Uptempo 41
In the battle for Downtown Conference supremacy, you knew this matchup was going to be a statement game. Despite Air Force 1’s only back-to-back losses on the season, after a stellar start, they knew they needed this game to get the tiebreaker and the season sweep against Uptempo in order to get that No. 1 seed come playoffs.
But with only five guys to start the game at tip-off, they knew it was going to be tough. Both teams were down players. Air Force 1 was operating without their guard core of
Paul Rivera,
Eric Raymundo and
Matt Donohue (as well as
Chris Dowling and
Tony Forte for much of the first half), while Uptempo was playing without suspended
Scott Williams,
Danny Millan,
Terrence Chin and
David Jacoby (who showed up midway through the first half).
But just like any game, when the clock starts, the guys on the court gotta step up. For Air Force 1, that meant rookie
Aron Phillips manning the point for almost the entire game – and he stepped up. Handling the ball and distributing it to his teammates, Phillips was droppin’ dimes like people outside of Macy’s near Christmas.
For a team known for it’s lockdown man-to-man defense, with no subs to start the game, Air Force 1 dropped back into a 2-3 zone. Playing defense and talking like you only could remember doing in high school, Air Force 1 was able to disrupt Uptempo’s game, jumping out to a sizeable lead in the first half.
But without their best scorer in Williams navigating with and without the ball, Uptempo looked to
Stalley to pace them on offense. Helping him out (of course) was
Mike Won, who as the team’s floor general was not going to let Uptempo go down without as fight. While any double-digit lead is hard to overcome in this league, if any team was capable it was Uptempo.
But hardnosed Air Force 1 defense coupled with a frustrated Jacoby in the paint meant good things for the team in white and blue. Also the fact the
Tony Forte (Air Force 1’s version of
Leon Powe) was grabbing the ball like he was going to pop it like a balloon, sure didn’t hurt. In the end, it was just Air Force 1’s night.
Final score: Air Force 1 wins, 54-41.
